Dewey Decimal Named Library Employee of the Month, Again

Dewey Decimal, Library Cat, has been named the Dongvile Public Library’s Employee of the Month for August 2026. It is his 22nd selection in the last 24 months.

Councilmember Francine Goodnight, the City Council’s liaison to the Library Board and to Dewey Decimal, presented the certificate at the circulation desk on Tuesday, August 18. Dewey accepted it by sitting on it.

July accomplishments

Staff and patrons submitted 43 nominations for July. Forty-one were for Dewey. His nomination cited:

  • Attending all 10 Summer Reading Program story times, including the one on bats
  • Supervising the book return cart for an estimated 212 hours
  • Greeting 1,318 patrons at the front door
  • Locating a large-print mystery missing since March 2023, which was under the circulation desk where he sleeps

About the program

The Library’s Employee of the Month program is open to staff, volunteers and resident animals. Dewey was not selected in two of the last 24 months. In February 2025, he was on medical leave following a dental cleaning. In November 2025, his nomination form was turned in after the deadline.

The honor comes with a reserved parking space by the front entrance, a certificate and a $25 gift card to Pet Stuff Galaxy. As in previous months, the parking space will be left empty.

“We have discussed whether Dewey should be eligible,” said Library Director Dolores Pawelek. “Each time, the staff has voted for Dewey.”

Dewey works Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the same hours the library is open, though he does not keep a set schedule within them. Please do not feed him. His diet is managed by his veterinarian.

The library will celebrate Dewey Decimal’s birthday on Thursday, December 10.
