Elections

The next City election is Saturday, May 1, 2027, for Mayor and Council Places 1, 3 and 5. The City Secretary administers City elections and accepts candidate filings.

All positions are elected at large, and the candidate with the most votes wins. If every race is unopposed, Council may declare the candidates elected and cancel the election (Election Code §2.053). Any Charter amendments Council places on the ballot will be posted here once ordered.

Running for Office

To be a candidate, you must:

  • Be a United States citizen and at least 18 years old.
  • Be a registered voter of the City by the filing deadline.
  • Have lived in Texas, and in the city limits, for at least 12 months before February 12, 2027.
  • Not have been finally convicted of a felony, unless pardoned or otherwise released from the disability.
  • Not have been found by a court to be mentally incapacitated.

File in person at the City Secretary’s office in City Hall, 150 E Brisket St, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Your application must be sworn before a notary or include an unsworn declaration. The City charges no filing fee and requires no petition (Charter §4.03).

The candidate packet includes:

  1. Application for a Place on the City Officer General Election Ballot
  2. Appointment of a Campaign Treasurer by a Candidate (Texas Ethics Commission Form CTA). File it before you accept any contribution or spend any money.
  3. Campaign finance report forms and the filing schedule
  4. The Code of Fair Campaign Practices (signing it is optional)
  5. A copy of the Home Rule Charter and the city limits map
  6. Political sign rules
  7. The Water Tower Paint Ad Hoc Committee status report (one page)

Political signs may not be placed in City rights-of-way, on City property or on the Dongvile Water Tower. Electioneering is prohibited within 100 feet of a polling place entrance during voting hours.

Early Voting

All early voting takes place at the Dongvile Public Library Community Room, 140 W Queso St.

The Library is normally closed on Mondays. On April 19 and April 26, only the Community Room will be open.

Election Day

On Saturday, May 1, 2027, vote from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Dongvile Public Library Community Room, 140 W Queso St. The City has one polling place, and every City voter votes there. If you’re in line at 7:00 p.m., you may vote.

Voter Registration and ID

The deadline to register for the May 1 election is Thursday, April 1, 2027. In Brisket County, the voter registrar is the Brisket County Elections Administrator, (936) 555-0160. Voter registration applications are also available at the City Secretary’s office.

When you vote in person, bring an acceptable photo ID, such as a Texas driver’s license, Texas personal ID card or U.S. passport. If you can’t reasonably get one, ask the election officials about the Reasonable Impediment Declaration.

Ballot by Mail

You may vote by mail if you are 65 or older on Election Day, have a disability, will be outside Brisket County during early voting and on Election Day, are expected to give birth within three weeks before or after Election Day, or are confined in jail but otherwise eligible.

Send your application to the Early Voting Clerk, Margie Dubose, City Secretary, P.O. Box 1887, Dongvile, TX 76969. You may also fax it to (936) 555-0199 or email it to [email protected]. If you fax or email it, mail the original so it arrives within four business days. Applications must be received by Tuesday, April 20, 2027.

Write-in votes for people who did not file a declaration of write-in candidacy are not counted (Election Code §146.031). In 2025, the Early Voting Ballot Board set aside 17 such votes for Mayor, all cast for “the goat on FM 1337.”
