About the position
The Public Works Water Division operates three wells in the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer, a 750,000-gallon ground storage tank at the Dongvile Well Field, the 500,000-gallon Dongvile Water Tower and about 46 miles of water main. Operators report to the Public Works Service Center, 603 E Railroad Ave, and work Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Operators take one on-call week in four. On-call weeks pay a $150 standby stipend, plus overtime for each call-out. Full-time benefits include health insurance, paid leave, City holidays and retirement.
Duties
- Locate and repair main breaks and service leaks, day or night
- Install, test and replace meters and service lines
- Exercise valves and flush, paint and maintain fire hydrants
- Collect bacteriological samples and record chlorine residuals as TCEQ requires
- Mark water lines in response to utility locate requests
- Inspect the well field, the ground storage tank and the Dongvile Water Tower, including climbing the tower with fall protection
- Help issue and rescind boil water notices and deliver door hangers
- Operate a backhoe, dump truck and trench shoring
Operators may not offer an opinion on the color of the water tower while in City uniform.
Minimum qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- TCEQ Class D Water Operator license, or obtain one within 12 months of hire. The City pays for the required course and exam.
- Valid Texas driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. You must obtain a Class B commercial driver’s license within six months of hire.
- Able to reach the Public Works Service Center within 30 minutes during on-call weeks
- Complete trench and excavation safety training within 90 days of hire
Preferred qualifications
- TCEQ Class C Water Operator license or higher (starting pay at the upper part of the range)
- Experience with backhoes, tapping machines and water line repair
- Experience with confined-space entry
Physical requirements
Work in trenches, meter vaults and valve vaults, and at height on the water tower. Lift and carry up to 75 pounds. Work outdoors in all weather, including nights, weekends and holidays during emergencies.
