About the department
The Dongvile Volunteer Fire Department answers about 310 calls a year from Station 1, 205 S Main St. It covers the city limits and the rural fire district around them. Every member is a volunteer, including Fire Chief Otis Barnhill. Weekday daytime coverage is the department’s greatest need.
Duties
- Respond to emergency calls when you are available, after you are alerted by pager or text
- Attend Tuesday drill nights, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., at least twice a month
- Inspect, clean and maintain apparatus, hose, tools and the station
- Help with Fire Prevention Week school visits and smoke alarm installations
- Work at least four of the twelve pancake breakfasts each year (third Saturday, 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., Station 1). Griddle training is provided.
Minimum qualifications
- At least 18 years old
- Live or work in the department’s response area and be able to reach Station 1 within 8 minutes of an alert
- Valid Texas driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
- Pass a criminal background check and a pre-membership medical evaluation
- Complete the 16-hour new member orientation within 90 days
- Complete a state-approved basic firefighter course within two years of joining. The department pays tuition. Members do not perform interior firefighting until they are certified.
Preferred qualifications
- EMT certification
- Availability on weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
- Experience with heavy equipment, pumps or large vehicles. Driver/operators are trained by the department; a commercial driver’s license is not required.
Physical requirements
Wear full turnout gear and a self-contained breathing apparatus, about 60 pounds in all, for extended periods. Climb ladders, carry and drag hose, and work in heat, smoke, darkness, confined spaces and at heights. Pass an annual respirator fit test.
