About the position
Parks & Recreation hires six to eight lifeguards each summer for the swim beach at Sweet Tea Lake Park. The 2027 season runs from Saturday, May 29, through Monday, September 6, 2027. The beach is open 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.: weekends only until June 5, daily from June 5 through August 15, then weekends through Labor Day.
Lifeguards work 20 to 40 hours per week, including weekends and Independence Day. This position is posted early. Work begins in May 2027. Applications received by March 1, 2027, get first consideration.
Duties
- Watch the roped swim area from an elevated stand and enforce beach rules
- Perform water rescues and give first aid and CPR until EMS arrives
- Clear the water at the first sound of thunder and keep it clear until 30 minutes after the last thunder
- Rotate stations every 30 minutes and take part in daily in-service drills
- Complete incident reports and the daily water-condition log
- Rake the beach at opening and keep the guard stands and first aid station clean
- Explain, as often as needed, that the water beyond the buoy line is not part of the swim area, although it is the same lake
Minimum qualifications
- At least 16 years old by May 29, 2027
- Current lifeguard certification with a waterfront skills module, CPR/AED for the professional rescuer, and first aid, all valid through September 6, 2027. You must hold these by May 15, 2027. The City reimburses the course fee after 30 days of employment.
- Swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for two minutes using legs only, and retrieve a 10-pound object from 10 feet of water
- Attend pre-season training on Saturday, May 22, 2027
Preferred qualifications
- Previous open-water or waterfront lifeguard experience
- Ability to speak English and Spanish
Physical requirements
Sit in an elevated stand in direct sun and heat for 30-minute rotations. Run on sand, swim at full effort, and lift, carry and tow an adult. See and hear well enough to scan the full swim area.
