About the position
The Dongvile Public Library at 140 W Queso St is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. The Library Assistant works about 20 hours per week on a set schedule that includes at least two Saturdays a month. This position reports to Library Director Dolores Pawelek and is not eligible for full-time benefits.
Duties
- Check materials in and out, issue library cards and collect fees for printing and lost items
- Shelve materials accurately using the Dewey Decimal Classification system and keep the shelves in order
- Help patrons use the public computers, printer and copier
- Help prepare and lead parts of weekly story time
- Process holds and interlibrary loan requests
- Open and close the building following the posted checklist
Working with Dewey Decimal
The library is home to Dewey Decimal, Library Cat. You must be comfortable working alongside a cat for your entire shift. Dewey has seniority. The chair behind the circulation desk with the folded towel on it is his and is not available. Staff feed Dewey on the posted schedule and do not give him additional food, regardless of what he indicates.

Minimum qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Six months of customer service experience
- Basic computer skills and the ability to put letters and numbers in exact order
- Available to work Saturdays
Preferred qualifications
- Experience in a library, bookstore or school
- Experience leading activities for young children
- Ability to speak English and Spanish
Physical requirements
Stand and walk for long periods. Push loaded book carts. Bend, kneel and use a step stool to reach low and high shelves. Lift boxes of books up to 30 pounds.
