Learn how to protect your pipes, heat your home safely and get ready for a hard freeze. Every household gets free pipe insulation while supplies last.

Texas freezes don’t come often, but when they do, they come fast. Emergency Management Coordinator Otis Barnhill and Public Works staff will cover what to do before, during and after a hard freeze.

Topics

  • Protecting your pipes: insulating exposed pipes, covering outdoor faucets and when to let a faucet drip. A stream about the width of a pencil lead is enough.
  • Your water shutoff: how to find the customer valve at your meter box and turn it off if a pipe bursts
  • Heating safely: keeping space heaters 3 feet from anything that can burn, and never using an oven or grill to heat your home
  • Generators: running them outdoors only, at least 20 feet from doors and windows
  • Staying informed: signing up for DongAlert. Paper sign-up cards will be available.
  • A 72-hour kit: water, food, medications, flashlights and batteries
  • Checking on neighbors, especially older residents who live alone

The outdoor warning sirens are for tornadoes. They are not sounded for freezes.

Free pipe insulation

The first 50 households will receive 12 feet of foam pipe insulation. If your exposed pipe is longer than 12 feet, please tell us at the workshop. That is a lot of exposed pipe.
