Thinking about running for Mayor or City Council in the May 1, 2027, election? The City Secretary will walk through qualifications, filing and campaign finance rules.

City Secretary Margie Dubose will explain how to get on the ballot for the City of Dongvile General Election on Saturday, May 1, 2027. The session is open to anyone thinking about running and anyone who is simply curious.

Offices on the ballot

Mayor and City Council Places 1, 3 and 5, each for a two-year term. Councilmembers are elected at large. Places are numbered for administrative purposes. Place 1 is not ranked above Place 5.

What we’ll cover

  • Qualifications under Texas Election Code §141.001, including the 12-month Texas residency and 6-month City residency requirements
  • The application for a place on the ballot, which must be sworn. The City Secretary’s office can notarize it at no charge.
  • The Appointment of Campaign Treasurer, which must be filed before you accept a contribution or spend money on your campaign
  • Campaign finance report deadlines
  • How ballot order is decided by drawing

Candidate packets will be available at the session and at the City Secretary’s office during business hours throughout the filing period.

The session will also cover the council meeting schedule. Council meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. Agenda item 1 is the water tower color.
